TVP
is an acronym for Textured Vegetable Protein. It is made by hydrolyzing
(water extraction process) the protein from soybeans. It is dried and generally
looks like granules much like Grape Nuts Cereal, but can also be formed
into large chunks or small strips. TVP has little flavour of it's own but
acts like a sponge, soaking up the flavour of whatever is mixed with it.
TVP was originally used as a beef substitute and filler in commercial products
but is now readily available in natural food stores everywhere.
To make the equivalent of 1 pound of hamburger meat: rehydrate, using 1 2/3 cups TVP plus 1 1/3 cups hot or boiling water. Provides you with 89 grams of protein in total.
To reconstitute
