| Simple Hard Candy
3 3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 cup water
flavouring
food coloring
Combine sugar, corn syrup and water in large saucepan. Cook on
medium heat until sugar dissolves; stirring constantly. Stop stirring once
sugar dissolves. Insert candy thermometer and bring to a boil until temperature
reaches 310 degrees. Remove from heat, stir in flavouring and food
coloring. Pour onto a cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil and powdered
sugar. Let cool completely, break and enjoy!
NOTE: You can buy flavoured oils, peppermint, cinnamon,
vanilla, wintergreen etc in shops that have candy making supplies. I have
successfully used vanilla and almond extracts and freshly grated ginger.
You can also add crushed nuts, pieces of dried fruit and all manner of
things at the same time that you add the flavouring but do it fast before
it cools and is hard to pour. After you break the candy my Grandma
always dusted the pieces with icing sugar. |
