Papaya packs a wollop with it's vitamin C content. Boasting twice the vitamin C of an orange, papaya is a warrior against gallbladder disease. Twice as many women as men suffer from gallbladder disease, a nasty ailment that can cause a myriad of miserable symptoms from simple indigestion to excruciating pain and vomiting that, in most cases, leads to surgery.
Scientists from the University of California in San Francisco, analyzed the blood of over 13,000 people and found that women who had lower levels of vitamin C were much more likely to develop a gallbladder illness than women who had high levels of the vitamin.
One medium papaya
(about 10 oz.), with its 188 mg. of vitamin C and a mere 119 calories,
is a refreshing source of the vitamin. The papaya, once considered
an exotic fruit, can now be found in most supermarkets in North America.
